All treatment starts with initial evaluation by Dr. Brown. Evaluation to assess appropriate indications, rule out contraindications and review risks, benefits and side effects. Spravato treatment usually requires prior authorization by insurance for approval. Previously established patients can call to schedule follow up to discuss potential for appropriateness of ketamine at any point while established with the practice.
No. Dr. Brown incorporates varying levels of psychotherapy with established and new patients as adjunctive treatment with medications, TMS or ketamine only. This is largely Due to the high need and limited resources for psychiatrist care in our rural area.
TMS is likely best described as “obnoxious.” The majority of patients are able to quickly adjust to sensation over the course of the first few treatments. There is an ability to decrease intensity of the sensation to adjust to individual needs and allow for a gentle increase to therapeutic intensities.
Hopefully, and for most people that is the goal. This is always a case by case answer. For most patients medication’s main role is offering a reduction in suffering such that they can make changes in their lives. These changes may be psychological, interpersonal, stress management related, spiritual or many others. The focus of medications is to treat symptoms such that growth can better be achieved, as this is the long term path towards potential for reduction in need of medications. There are exceptions to this depending on diagnosis. Above all, the least amount of medications or interventions needed is always considered the most appropriate goal.
